Colcrys (colchicine) is a substrate of the efflux transporter P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Of the cytochrome P450 enzymes tested, CYP3A4 was mainly involved in the metabolism of colchicine. If Colcrys is administered with drugs that inhibit P-gp, most of which also inhibit CYP3A4, increased concentrations of colchicine are likely.
Colchicine occurs as a pale yellow powder that is soluble in water. COLCRYS (colchicine, USP) tablets are supplied for oral administration as purple, filmcoated, capsule-shaped tablets (0.1575” x 0.3030”), debossed with “AR 374” on one side and scored on the other, containing 0.6 mg of the active ingredient colchicine USP.
Trade names for colchicine are Colcrys or Mitigare which are manufactured as a dark– and light-blue capsule having a dose of 0.6 mg. Colchicine is also prepared as a white, yellow, or purple pill having a dose of 0.6 mg.
Colcrys is used to treat joint pain and swelling due to attacks of gouty arthritis, and familial Mediterranean fever. Colchicine is more popular than other colchicum alkaloids.
